WCOE announces new strategic alliance partnership Please welcome the National Association of Surety Bond Producers (NASBP) as a new WCOE partner. Every construction company owner and executive understands the importance of surety bonds and this new alliance will strengthen the communication between WCOE members and the critically important bonding industry. Our alliance calls for joint lobbying on issues important to both, joint education and training programs, sharing joint initiatives and task forces and perhaps most important, NASBP will work to develop materials and to distribute information on cultural, ethnic and gender diversity issues impacting the construction industry. We are delighted with this new partnership and you will be meeting many of their executives at our February conference.

Does your shoe fit? WCOE has received an interesting request and would like your feedback. A Wisconsin shoe company wants to know if there is an interest in, and a market for, a woman's work boot. No, not boots with high heels, but in sizes to fit women and with what they call “anatomical construction”. As you read this, are you or anyone you know interested in participating in a task force to help this company understand if there is a market and if so, what women are looking for? Shoot an email to penny@wcoeusa.org if you're interested and we'll connect you. |

New study shows importance of small and mid-size companies Did you ever wonder about the importance of what you do for the national economy? The newly released report on private sector employment has some very interesting statistics about job creation. Small and mid-sized businesses (less than 500 employees) have added 194,000 of the 206,000 total jobs created in November. That means that big business only created 6% of all new jobs, leaving the heavy economic lifting to America's intrepid entrepreneurs. Even more interesting perhaps, small businesses with less than 50 employees were responsible for one-half of all new jobs. You can read the full report on our website. |

Chairman Graves outraged over erroneous Pro-active watchdog for small business, Congressman Sam Graves is the Chair of the House Committee on Small Business. He appeared on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 show to discuss his committee's investigation into what he deems violations in the procurement process. The issue revolves around a $433 million sole source contract given to SIGA Technologies to provide 1.7 million doses of an experimental smallpox drug for the nation's biodefense stockpile. SIGA “mistakenly” identified themselves as a small business to get the sole source set-aside according to Chairman Graves, however they were awarded the contract anyway. The House Committee on Small Business press release is on our website.

Honorary Member Long time WCOE member, former Board President and a founder of WCOE's Resource Center, reported in this week with news that she recently received a call from Georgia's Governor Nathan Deal who asked her to serve on the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. No, she doesn't claim to be a psychologist but after many years in the construction industry, perhaps she is better qualified than someone who has a “Dr.” in front of their name. You can congratulate Judy at jfgrammer@comcast.net. |
