Major prime contractors confirmed for LA conference Citing the fact that they are “very anxious to meet qualified women owned construction companies” three major prime contractors have confirmed their participation in the Los Angeles conference. CC Myers, Swinerton and Kiewit have all jumped at the chance to attend the conference and participate in the July 23rd panel discussion about how to get your foot into their door and become their favorite subcontractor or teaming partner. These companies are trying to find you and routinely send out bid announcements to WCOE seeking qualified women owned companies. Now they are coming in person to meet you. Remember, this conference is the best deal in town at the very low registration fee of $225 for a very full day of meaningful workshops, great business opportunities, and fantastic networking. Just take a look at the agenda and we know you'll be impressed. Register today as space is limited and when it's sold out, it's sold out! |

Are you going to the DNC or RNC Conventions? If not, do you want to go? WCOE has been invited by WIPP to co-host a luncheon at both political conventions this fall and you are invited to attend. There is no charge and you do not need to be a credentialed delegate to attend. The luncheons are: RNC – August 28th in Tampa, FL and DNC – September 5th in Charlotte, NC. The exact location is still to be determined. Do you want to be a sponsor of this event? There are also a few sponsor slots available for each sluncheon. Get your company's “name in lights” as a sponsor of the luncheon for a $5,000 donation. Pre-reservations are required – just email penny@wcoeusa.org. Whether or not you agree this is the most important election in our lifetime, it will certainly be interesting. We'll see you there! |

Have you signed up to protect your crews? As reported in ENR last week, a consortium of construction industry organizations, made up of WCOE, AGC, ABC, CURT and CRIT, has worked to create a substance abuse policy to protect construction workers and their employers. As a WCOE member you can sign up to access this information – and sign on to take the pledge that you will do whatever you can to make your construction jobsites drug and alcohol free. The coalition has also provided suggested “best practices” for companies to adopt. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence reports that construction has one of the highest rates of workplace drug and alcohol use across all industries. Not only is having best practices in place a good thing for your employees, it is a cost and productivity issue for the business owner. Protect yourself, your business and your employees by taking the pledge today.

Do you know about Google Alert? One of the many tips shared by our speakers at the New York City WCOE regional conference last month was to be sure to “Google” yourself and your company at least once a month to just see what's out there in hyperspace. You just never know what great thing (or awful thing) might be floating around waiting for a prospective new client to find when they go searching for information about you. But there is another service that is free that few attendees knew about – Google Alert. It is a simple (really, really simple) free service that will send you an email when your name or your company name is mentioned anywhere – in the newspaper, on the web, in a blog, in a newsletter, on twitter, on facebook/linkedin/etc/etc/etc. Back in the “olden days” these were called clipping services and they were very expensive. Now it's free and available to everyone. Just go to http://www.google.com/alerts and fill out a super-easy form and you're ready to go. You can even set it up to send you alerts every time one is found, or batch them together in a daily or weekly email. One of the workshop speakers already confirmed for our April, 2013 Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, DC is an expert on how to keep negative information about you from popping up in a Google search. But for now, at least get plugged in so you know what your clients and prospective clients are seeing about you. |
