Hansel Phelps is trying
to find you

With a new government project under contract, Hansel Phelps needs to find women owned small businesses to work with them on the new SSA National Support Center project in Urbana, MD. The list is extensive and includes interior and exterior construction plus landscaping and temporary laborers. If you are interested, the informational meeting is set for September 28th from 9:00 to 12:00 noon at 2700 Turf Valley Road in Ellicott City, MD.

You must pre-register to attend by emailing hanselphelps@ureach.com no later than September 21st. Good luck!

Are you near Cincinnati?

If you are, you should mark your calendar to attend the joint WCOE/ABC Ohio Valley "Meet & Greet" event on September 20th. Immediate Past President Theresa Kern will be representing WCOE and we know she would love to have other WCOE members (and prospective members) there as well. The event is from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at First Star Safety, 4 Kovach Drive, Suite 403, Cincinnati, OH. Send your RSVP to Tammy Kerr, tammy@ovabc.org.

Hey Ladies, help us to help you!

A few weeks ago we invited you to participate in a special women business owners insight panel organized by the Center for Women’s Business Research (a private, non-profit think tank about women entrepreneurs). This is OUR group and they need our help. CWBR can’t invent statistics and opinions. They need to know from the horse’s mouth – that’s you – what your entrepreneurial life is like, what’s on your mind, and how your business is doing – and with whom. So far, we’re embarrassed to say, only one (that’s right 1) WCOE member has signed on and we’re looking pretty inept. Please do all women entrepreneurs a favor by logging in now and filling out the profile survey. Yes, everything is confidential and all reports are in the aggregate. Let our voices be heard on Capitol Hill and in corporate suites across America.

Curious about pending Business Insurance premium increases?

Giant insurers Marsh and McLennan has released its August report on insurance trends for the construction industry. With the understatement that "Economic uncertainty continues to be a dominant issue for the construction industry", the report notes that insurers are seeking increases of 5% to 15% with high risk coverage increasing even more and sometimes outright policy cancellation. New York is singled out as being a "challenge" to insure for commercial general liability. The full report is available on our website. A special thank you to Steven Coombs of Risk Resources in LaGrange Park, IL for sending the report to us.

Women’s History Museum needs your help

You may recall from past Turning Point newsletters that we are very involved in an effort to establish a new museum on that National Mall alongside the Smithsonian Museums to document the role of women in America’s history. Now it’s your turn to put your support behind this effort by signing onto a petition to urge Congress to approve the location. No Federal money is involved in this effort – but Congress has to approve any construction on the national mall and they are dragging their feet.

Please log onto http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-congress-women-s-history-needs-a-home and sign the petition. (Be patient, the video has to load before you can sign on.) We only need 25,000 signatures by the end of the year. Log in, sign the petition, and then pass it along.

Chicago Caucus of WCOE
takes on WalMart

Citing an April, 2011 report in Crain’s Chicago Business publication about WalMart’s Austin project and their reported treatment of a minority/woman-owned contractor, the Chicago Caucus has sent a formal letter asking to open a dialog with WalMart in order to introduce them to WCOE members.

Stay tuned on this – no doubt there will be more to come!

Uncannily quiet in the
nation's capitol

This is an extremely truncated Turning Point this week as it seems the US is still recovering from "vacation-brain". Washington DC is a ghost town with the RNC convention in Tampa last week and the DNC convention in Charlotte this week – even the roaming media trucks are gone. But next week promises to be full with a Congress back in session and roaring to go. Stay tuned – next week will be full of information.
